Binaural Beat Generator
When two sine waves of slightly different frequencies (eg f1 and f2) are played on a loudspeaker, the waves will undergo interference. This means that by the time the sound reaches your ears, the waves will have physically added together and this superposition results in a wave at a frequency of (f1+f2)/2 which beats at a frequency of f2-f1.
Binaural beats music is used by people all over the world as a form of ‘brainwave entrainment’ – a process used to entrain the brain into different states that contribute positively to well-being and personal-development. What most people don’t realize is that although the creation of binaural beats music has only been possible through technological advancement in the last 100 or so.
If the two tones are played through headphones (one frequency in the left ear, another in the right ear) each ear receives a pure tone and no physical interference can occur. Amazingly, the majority of people will still perceive a beating sound which is a purely psychological effect and is known as a 'binaural beat'.
Use the Binaural Beat Generator below to investigate this effect yourself, and feel free to add your favourite frequency combinations to the comments section. Please note, headphones must be used for the effect to work (you will hear a beat if you use speakers but this is a physical phenomenon as opposed to a psychological one). Please remember the tone generator is currently only compatible with Firefox 4 or later.
Disclaimer: Binaural beats are widely available, simple in concept and published studies (see e.g. Helané Wahbeh, Carlo Calabrese, and Heather Zwickey. The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. January/February 2007, 13(1): 25-32) have shown that they can reduce levels of anxiety. However, binaural beats are the auditory equivalent of strobe lights and for certain beat frequencies they may affect the behaviour of brainwaves - a process called 'entrainment'. A well known example of entrainment is the practice of gently rocking a baby to sleep, and many people use entrainment for relaxation/meditation purposes. However, we recommend that you seek professional medical advice before use. You should not use the Binaural Beat Generator if you are under 18, pregnant, prone to seizures or suffer from a mental illness. [No Regrets]:
I had an experience last night I want to share, but I would never confess this to anyone in my life.
For the past week or so I've been listening to binaural beats for a few hours while studying. It was okay and for the most part I found they were a hit or miss with helping me concentrate.
Anyway I go to sleep last night and out of nowhere I have the most disturbing dream I have EVER had. It was beyond a nightmare. It was hellishly gross and I know it had something to do with those fucking frequencies.
Basically in the dream I won a chance to meet some celebrity guy or something. So I go meet him and we're chilling, listening to his music. Then I ask him if he's ever heard of binaural beats and if he'd like to try it. He says yes so I bring them up on my phone and pass him the earbuds.
Once he starts listening his body starts to rot in the most grotesque way.. but he's still alive and can't move. He looks like the worst burn victim alive, but worse. I am shocked at this. He then stops listening to the beats and stops rotting, but doesn't get better.
At that point we both know he is going to die.
Then he says 'his soul has left, you are now with his body only. I am the body.'
Then I felt someone choking me in my dream, which prompted me to wake up.
Now I thought if I were to experience any dreams because of this thing that they would be at the most some existential nightmare not unlike a bad shroom trip or something, but that didn't happen. The dream I had was much, much worse. I truly felt it was hell.
Please stay away from binaural beats.
